Few words about Meteora...

The breathtaking region of Meteora is situated in the North Western part of Thessaly, marking the end of the plain of Thessaly and nestled between the North East of Hasia and West of Pindos. The colossal rocks that emerge from the ground form a magnificent spectacle that is possibly unparalleled around the globe. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated the Holy Meteora as a "monument of humanity that must be preserved."

Few words about Kalabaka...

The town situated at the base of the revered Meteora rocks is an ancient city in Thessaly with a rich history. Known as Eginio in ancient times, it was later called Stagi during the 9th century in Byzantine times due to its association with the bishop Stagon. The name's origin is debated, with some suggesting it refers to "wheat tube," while others believe it references the "caves or holes of the rocks."

Few words about Monasteries...

For over 600 years, the Holy Monastery of the Great Meteoro (or the Transfiguration of Jesus), the Varlaam Monastery, the Saint Stephen Monastery, the Holy Trinity Monastery, the Saint Nicholas Anapafsas Monastery, and the Rousanou Monastery have continued the tradition of Orthodoxy uninterrupted. These monasteries are all situated atop the rocks of Meteora.

Meteora

Around 25-30 million years ago, the central region of Europe underwent geological transformations which led to its uplift. This event gave rise to the creation of Tempi, which in turn resulted in the flow of water into the Aegean Sea. During the tertiary period, the solid masses of "rocks" were separated from the mountain range of Pindos, which was created during the alpine orogenies. Over the centuries, the plain of the Pinios River was formed between them.

Monasteries

The monasteries' structures blend seamlessly with the surrounding rocks, appearing as a natural extension of the landscape. In addition to their architectural beauty, they hold an invaluable artistic and cultural legacy. The concentration of several monasteries in a relatively small area, combined with the deeply spiritual and religious lifestyle of the Orthodox monks, has drawn worldwide admiration and fascination.

Kalabaka

The town situated beneath the Holy rocks of Meteora is considered to be one of the oldest settlements in Thessaly. It is said that during the period of Turkish occupation, the town's name was changed to Kalabaka. The name was derived either from the Byzantine family Kalabaka, according to some sources, or from the Turkish words "kale mpak," meaning prestigious castle, according to others.
